Mother & Father branding

This was my logo design for the Mother & Father branding section of the project.
I wanted just a simplistic logo to resemble parenting. I had the parent figures behind the child figure to show they are protecting the child.

Development of poster.

This is my first photograph that I had taken. I wasn't bothered about background as I was going to cut this out. My main focus was on the banner so I held that out, making sure my fingers didn't cover the lettering.

This is my first final poster. I wanted this one to just be simple and dark. With only sections showing of the photograph.

Here is my photograph I am going to be using for my mugshot poster.I took it myself and created the police banner in photoshop and printed in onto card.

This was my first development of my poster, I wasn't too pleased with the overall look of it, I was going for more of a grungy look. Also one of the main elements of the poster is the police banner, and it doesn't really stand out enough for my liking, and some of the text is covered by the hand. Also I want to make it look more realistic.

I found this poster on DeviantArt and it is the exact look I was going for. The grungyness of the background image and the cleanness of the banner, with the extruded text ad metallic look. This is definitely the way I am going to be going with my own piece.

This was my second development of the police banner. I created this is cinema4D to get the 3d text and lighting on it. I am still not fully satisfied with this one.

I tried out the banner with my photo. I still wasn't fully pleased with the outcome so I think I will make some adjustments to the photograph and the banner.

I then developed it further and created this. This is a lot more what I was looking for. I like the grungyness of the metal, and the shadow on the extruded elements creates a more realistic look.

I added the new banner and I think it is a vast improvement. Still need some adjustments on the photo.

I took the blur off the the photo and it looks much better. More gritty and grungy, the look I was going for. I am definately close to my final now. I may experiment with the background.

Here is my final. I am pleased with the final outcome now. it has the grittyness I was looking for, the banner looks realistic. And the message is clear. This will be A2 sized and presented on the wall next to my animation projection.

Sketch up of mug shot.

This is what the photograph I will take, for use in the mug shot image, will look like.
I will either create a background with the height lines on and place the model in front of it, or photoshop them in after.

Mug shot poster

For my poster now I will be doing it in a police line mug shot style. It will have the same information graphics as I was thinking of with my first idea, pointing out elements of the face that we inherit from our parents, but I will also add information about he choices he's made himself, fights, drugs, getting arrested etc.

Here is my first sketch for the layout.

NEW IDEA!!

Looking over my project is realised that, well it's boring. It wont catch anyones eye among the other exhibits at the end of year show, and its not been that interesting to do.
Luckily I have came up with a new idea that I can still use all the information I have collected and still uses the same techniques as my initial idea, but will be more appealing to the audience.

Are the parents to blame?

Whenever there is a story in the news about a teenager committing a crime, or overdosing on drugs, people always blame the parents.

My new project is going to be a campaign to support that it's not always the parents fault, sometimes the kid is too be held responsible for their own actions.

I will still use the idea of information graphics and still use the animation I have created but alter it.

The animation will start of the same with childhood pictures, but then i will speed up the
slides and show images of youths committing crimes and taking drugs etc. This will show that even with a good upbringing the kid can still turn out bad, its the decisions they choose to make that depicts this.

Jonathan Barnbrook

I have looked at Barnbrook's work in a lot of projects during college, and I was trying to steer clear of him this time so not to be repetitive, however his info graphics work, such as 'The little book of shocking global facts' is to say the least inspirational and the style that I am going for.
He uses both the icons and the photography in his work, just like I am going to.

I was most inspired by these two images of his.
I like the simplicity of the first with the photograph covering the whole of the background, then to the right of the main part of the photo, where there is negative space he has placed text and symbols.
The second inspired me as I was looking at how to have a way of pointing at sections of the face with text explaining how we inherit that part genetically.

What are genetics?

Here is some information from wikipedia on genetics.

Genetics deals with the molecular structure and function of genes, with gene behavior in the context of a cell or organism (e.g.dominance and epigenetics), with patterns of inheritance from parent to offspring, and with gene distribution, variation and change in populations. Given that genes are universal to living organisms, genetics can be applied to the study of all living systems, fromviruses and bacteria, through plants (especially crops) and domestic animals, to humans (as in medical genetics).

The fact that living things inherit traits from their parents has been used since prehistoric times to improve crop plants and animals through selective breeding. However, the modern science of genetics, which seeks to understand the process of inheritance, only began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-19th century.[6] Although he did not know the physical basis for heredity, Mendel observed that organisms inherit traits via discrete units of inheritance, which are now called genes.

Genes correspond to regions within DNA, a molecule composed of a chain of four different types of nucleotides—the sequence of these nucleotides is the genetic information organisms inherit. DNA naturally occurs in a double stranded form, with nucleotides on each strand complementary to each other. Each strand can act as a template for creating a new partner strand. This is the physical method for making copies of genes that can be inherited.

The sequence of nucleotides in a gene is translated by cells to produce a chain of amino acids, creating proteins—the order of amino acids in a protein corresponds to the order of nucleotides in the gene. This relationship between nucleotide sequence and amino acid sequence is known as the genetic code. The amino acids in a protein determine how it folds into a three-dimensional shape; this structure is, in turn, responsible for the protein's function. Proteins carry out almost all the functions needed for cells to live. A change to the DNA in a gene can change a protein's amino acids, changing its shape and function: this can have a dramatic effect in the cell and on the organism as a whole.

Although genetics plays a large role in the appearance and behavior of organisms, it is the combination of genetics with what an organism experiences that determines the ultimate outcome. For example, while genes play a role in determining an organism's size, the nutrition and health it experiences after inception also have a large effect.

So basically what genetics are are the combination of gene's from our parents that form us.

Will we become our parents?

As I said earlier, my project is not just about the physical genetics that we inherit from our parents, it is also about how we can inherit emotional and personal traits from them. By this I mean things such as humour, depression, aggression, fashion style, music taste etc.

There has been a lot of discussion towards this topic, some say it is to do with the genetics that are passed down to us from our parents DNA, but some say it is to do with your upbringing. I personally believe that it is to do with the way you are raised and what your parents expose you to as a child. Some parents want to nurture their child to protect them, but this can effect them later in life as they are not accustom to the real world when they move away from home. However on the other hand some parents give their children to much freedom so they have to learn lessons themselves. Sometimes they learn these lessons from the mistakes that they make. These mistakes can vary from falling off their bike, to getting caught stealing. I'm not saying that all children that are allowed freedom grow up to be thieves, as I have been allowed a lot of freedom myself and have never been caught up in anything like that.

Research.

I started looking into information graphics for inspiration for my work. While looking for information graphics on the topic of genetics I could not find that many, and couldn't find really any that inspired me or that I thought were good graphically. So I just started looking onto other information graphics just so I could be inspired by the different styles and techniques they have used.

While looking i realised that most information graphics is vector based, using simple icons and symbols to put across their message or give the information needed. I liked this idea, but I also wanted to include some photography, just so it would give it a more realistic look, but also with the graphic look around it with the typography and icons.

Images

My plan is to have several layers of acrylic/perspex sheets with elements of an image printed on them to form my poster. I first looked at pricing.

I then started looking at printing methods aswell, and I came to the realisation that this would be a very expensive for of printing my posters. So I started to look into other forms see through papers that I could print on for a smaller price.

I then figured out it would be cheaper and more effective if I used Acetate sheets to form my poster imagery. It would be a lot cheaper and easier to get my designs printing on this as you can use a regular inkjet printer.

I will do some experiments with acetate to see if it is successful then I will use it for my finals.

Animation

Here is how I created the slide projector animation in AfterEffects.
First of all I scanned my chosen photographs and arranged them on a circle in Illustrator.

I then imported this into AfterEffects and positioned it so you could only see one of the photographs in the composition. I then rotated the circle so the next photo would be revealed. Leaving a few seconds for the photo to be viewed until it rotates again and the next photo is revealed, and so on.

Later I will add the information graphics animated to the photographs.

Proposal.

The theme that I came up with for the project 'Parents' is to do with how we inherit attributes from our parents. We inherit physical qualities, such as eye colour, hair colour, height but we can also inherit qualities such as humour, aggression and trustworthiness. These qualities can either be genetically past on, or be influenced by your upbringing and how your parents raised you.
To represent this I will be creatin
g imagery/posters and an animation. The animation will be based on a slide projector, with the photographs of my family turning on a circle to be revealed in the viewer. The reason for the photographs of my family is to show how i have inherited qualities from my family. I will also have some information graphics animated onto the photographs, showing the attributes such as eye colour e.t.c. This will be projected onto a wall or screen.
The imagery/posters will be information graphics and photographic . I will have them on stands around where my animation will be projected.
